Lunch in the footsteps of Johannes Larsen 2017 (SOLD OUT)

There are far-reaching skies at Lake Filsø. To pay homage to the Jutland heath landscape, and to honour the famous Danish bird painter Johannes Larsen (1867–1961), who visited the inn and its scenic countryside consecutively over a span of 30 years, we repeat our special Johannes Larsen lunch event in 2017 at Henne Kirkeby Kro on the dates below.

We start at Henne Kirkeby Kro, where we meet in the Staldgården.

Lunch

Our head chef Paul Cunningham, who has been inspired by Larsen’s favourite Danish meals, has put together a small delicate lunch menu for the occasion.

Please note that this lunch menu is not part of our daily lunch offerings but is created for this event only.

Tour

The tour assisted by nature guide Merete Vigen is an opportunity to learn about Johannes Larsen’s attachment to the place and the lake’s historic, large-scale restoration project. The tour is approximately 6 km long and will be followed by a nice Guided tour of “Jægerhuset” (The Hunters’ Lodge) dedicated to Johannes Larsen, who also lends his name to the large suite in the room wing.

In the footsteps of Johannes Larsen

Since 1790, Henne Kirkeby Kro has been the next door neighbour to the church in the small village of Henne Kirkeby and opposite the scenic shallow Lake Filsø.

In spring og 1914 the renowned birdpainter Johannes Larsen visited Henne Kirkeby Kro for a 75 days retreat armed with paint brushes and paint easel. In fact, it was here at Lake Filsø that Johannes Larsen painted his famous birds in earnest. And it was here that he found an abundance of motifs for his paintings. Many of Larsen’s most famous bird paintings were indeed painted by Lake Filsø.

Johannes Larsen was in his element in this environment, and was an unobtrusive, but treasured guest of honour at Henne Kirkeby Kro. Every year, for 30 years, he checked into the inn for a lengthy stay, during which he hunted and worked, depicting the natural delights of the region.

We follow in Fynbo painter Johannes Larsen’s (1867–1961) footsteps from Henne Kirkeby Kro to Lake Filsø. Life at Henne Kirkeby Kro during Johannes Larsen’s stays here was marked by lively sociability. The painter dined and stayed at the inn together with the other hunters, and a succession of innkeepers ensured that the food was up to standard.
